Hi 2L had a blast during our Cursive Reward Party! I'm very proud of them for returning their cursive homework on a consistent basis in order to receive the reward! Please read below to see our ABC Countdown!

SPELLING PATTERN: -au, -aw Example: auto, fault, launch, haul, fawn jaw, law, yawn Spelling City Website: www.spellingcity.com/users/jlawless1 SIGHT WORDS: REVIEW of all of the sight words this quarter. READING FOCUS: No Mentor Text this week due to the STAR Testing, Field Trip, and ABC countdown events. WRITING/GRAMMAR: 2L will be reviewing all parts of speech that they've learned to date. We will begin poetry writing soon. Next week I'll be exposing students to different kinds of poetry. MATH: SHAPES! Unit 6: Shapes - Next week 2L will focus on 2 and 3 Dimensional Shapes. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will continue to observe the lifecycle of a beetle. We now have some BEETLES! It's been so exciting to see them! 2L is really enjoying seeing the different stages! Second Step: 2L has completed all of the 2nd Step lessons for the year. Therefore, we will take time out each week to discuss our classroom behavior and individual behavior goals. WRITING/GRAMMAR: 2L will be reviewing verbs in grammar. 2nd grade will continue going through the writing process with the Animal Research writing pieces. We're hoping to get to publishing their final copy by the end of the week. MATH: $$$! Unit 5: Money - Next week 2L will practice counting money, as well as compare money. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will continue to observe the lifecycle of a beetle. Hopefully all of our mealworms will be in the pupa stage by the end of this week! WRITING/GRAMMAR: 2L will be practicing contractions in grammar. 2nd grade will continue going through the writing process with the Animal Research writing pieces. MATH: $$$! This week we'll begin Unit 5: Money. Students will identify the names of coins and their values. We'll begin counting coins, as well. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will continue to observe the lifecycle of a beetle. This week I'm expecting many of the mealworms to change to the Pupa stage. Second Step: Instead of a 2nd Step lesson, we'll have a class meeting to discuss our behavior goals for the rest of the year. Have a great weekend! WRITING/GRAMMAR: 2L will be reviewing collective nouns, proper nouns, and adjectives in grammar. 2nd grade will continue working on the Animal Research writing pieces. Next week I will model how to turn the animal organizer into a draft. MATH: 2L did a great job measuring in centimeters and meters. I will assess students on what we've learned so far in measurement next week. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: In Science, 2L is wrapping up solids and liquids. Students will meet their MEALWORM!!! Yes, we will begin our insect unit next week. Students will observe the lifecycle of a beetle. Second Step: Unit 4, Lesson 20 is about Playground Exclusion. SPELLING PATTERN: -ED Past Tense; ING Present Tense Example: painted, hunted, landed, shocked, jumped, sinking, baking, shopping Spelling City Website: www.spellingcity.com/users/jlawless1 SIGHT WORDS: eight, laugh READING FOCUS: We will be focusing on finding evidence that support points the author is trying to make. WRITING/GRAMMAR: 2L will be reviewing past and present tense verbs. 2nd grade will now be working on Animal Research writing pieces. This week I will model how to research and record information onto the animal research writing organizer. MATH: 2L did a great job measuring in inches, feet, and yards last week. This week students will measure in centimeters and meters. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: In Science, students will begin investigation 3.1. Second Step: Unit 4, Lesson 19 is about taking responsibility. SPELLING PATTERN: REVIEW WEEK Spelling City Website: www.spellingcity.com/users/jlawless1 SIGHT WORDS: We will review 3rd quarter sight words this week. READING FOCUS: We will be focusing on end of the quarter reading and writing assessments, but will also begin the mentor text Rosie Revere by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts. WRITING/GRAMMAR: 2L did a great job on persuasive writing! I can't wait to give Mr. Etnyre 2L's letters! 2nd grade will now be working on Animal Research writing pieces. This week we will discuss what a researcher does and characteristics of different kinds of animals. I will model part of the animal research. MATH: 2L did a great job measuring in inches using a ruler last week. This week students will continue measuring in inches. I will also introduce measuring in feet and yards. Students will practice measuring with inches, feet, or yards. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: In Science, students will wrap up investigation 2.3 and read about liquids in their science book. READING FOCUS: We will continue reading and engaging in activities related to the mentor text Stellaluna by Jane Cannon. Next week we'll continue to focus on Author's Purpose,Point of View, and Repetition/Alliteration. WRITING/GRAMMAR: 2L will wrap up their Persuasive Letters to Mr. Etnyre (on trying to persuade him to either not have school on the weekends/holidays/summer or to have school on the weekends/holidays/summer). MATH: We'll begin Unit 4 - MEASUREMENT! This unit is even more hands on than other units they've participated in. It's a lot of fun for our 2nd graders! Next week 2L will practice measuring objects using units of measure. Students will learn how to measure using a ruler with inches. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES: In Science, students will complete Solids & Liquids Investigations 2.2 and 2.3 to answer the focus questions: How can liquids be described? and Where do you think the water is for each of the bottle positions?
